Working in Cambridge Buildings

Restoration in Cambridge has its own logistics. Houses stand close together, driveways are rare and many streets are resident-permit parking only, so when you call, tell us where a truck can stop near the door, whether there is a driveway or an alley, and how to reach the basement: inside stairs, a bulkhead or both.

Triple-deckers and condo buildings mean several households, and often an owner who lives elsewhere. Water from a third-floor leak can reach every unit and the basement, so we start by finding out who needs to know, who can open which doors, and whose insurance covers what.

Older buildings also hide surprises: plaster ceilings with more weight in them than they look, balloon-framed walls where water travels between floors, and basements with fieldstone walls that hold moisture for weeks. We take readings beyond the obvious wet spots, because that is where the next problem usually starts.

Coverage Questions

How quickly can you reach my town?

We are based in Cambridge, so Cambridge itself and the towns that border it are the quickest for us to reach. Rather than quote a number for every town, we give you a realistic arrival time when you call, based on where we are and what you describe, and we tell you what to do in the meantime. Emergency calls are answered around the clock.

Do you work in historic districts?

Yes. Cambridge has historic districts and neighborhood conservation districts, including the Avon Hill Neighborhood Conservation District, where the Cambridge Historical Commission and the district commissions review outside work. Inside work such as drying, cleaning and replacing plaster rarely involves the Commission. Permanent changes to the outside that can be seen from the street may need its review before the work is done, so temporary protection like a roof tarp comes first, and we plan the permanent repair to keep original materials where they can be saved.

Can you work in a condo building or a triple-decker with tenants?

Yes, and in multi-unit buildings the water rarely stays in one unit. We may need to get into the units above and below, the basement and the common stairwell, so it helps to have the landlord, the condo association or the property manager in the loop from the start. In a condo, the association's master policy and each owner's own policy can both be involved; we document the damage unit by unit so each insurer sees its part.

Do you work for businesses as well as homes?

Yes. We handle water, fire, mold and storm damage for homeowners and businesses alike: shops, offices and the commercial spaces on the ground floor of mixed-use buildings. Tell us about opening hours and access, and we will plan the work around them where we can.

Damage happening right now?

Call us. Emergency calls are answered around the clock, and we will tell you what to do while we are on the way. For anything less urgent, send a request and we will call you back.
